Wedding Countdown
I’m getting married in - eek - 5 weeks’ time. There are only two things I’m sure about. the man I’m marrying my dress I just couldn’t give a damn about anything else. I’m not stressing; I really don’t care about flowers, music, venue, food, decorations, family. I just want to stand there in my rockin’ dress, put my hands in his and say,...

Australia Day
I spent the afternoon with old friends and getting to know new friends. Enjoying delicious food and doing things I love - watching the cricket on TV and listening to music all whilst slightly inebriated and soaking in the cool breeze through the harsh summer heat. I’m sure many Australians spent their day the same way. Is this the essence of Australia Day? I don’t believe so. This is...

Ask Rachel: What should I charge for my work?
This series of posts from Rachel Hills has been invaluable for me as I learn the writing business. rachelhills: Image: Antique German Continental Typewriter, by Valeriana Solaris Sara writes: “I was made redundant from my job just before Christmas. I worked for several websites mostly as a copywriter, critic and editor. I am thinking of making a huge life change this year - rather than...

Career update
I have applied to be a (voluntary) regional editor for a gaming website targeted at women. This is something I’d had my eye on doing right from the beginning when I’d decided to leave my job and take up writing. While I love writing, I think I’d make a good editor. I like to look at pieces, take them apart and improve them. Nothing frustrates me more than a good idea, poorly...

Instant Gratification
I hate receiving links directed through Facebook. Unless I’m absolutely desperate to read what’s on the other side, I simply won’t bother to follow the rabbit down the hole. If I receive a link I only want to click once. Quite frankly I’m getting sick of using Facebook because of all the advertiser content through social ads and applications and really only use my...

Article Feedback
For my second assessment I had to write a full article, subject of my choice, without any direction. At this stage none of the course materials had covered interview techniques, research, article structure, language - all of the things that rushed through my head when I read, “now for your next assessment, we want you to write an 800-1000 word article.” What?! After an enormous amount...

Full Steam Ahead!
I’m usually fairly pessimistic about the new year. I can’t remember the last time I made a new year’s resolution - I tend to think that goals need to be measurable and with nothing close to January that is particularly significant for me (ie. birthdays, anniversaries, etc) I’ve been one to set goals at other times during the year ie. to run in the Bridge to Brisbane (held...

Coffee in the back yard
This morning I set up some chairs in a shady spot in the corner of the backyard and enjoyed a cup of coffee and slice of nutella on bread. The cat rolled around at my feet and I felt quite European, except for the large backyard that spread out in front of me, rather than a quaint courtyard or balcony the French or Italians might otherwise enjoy. Bliss.
